Biography

Rajaram was the son of the founder of the Marathi state, Shivaji, from his second wife, Soyrabai. When Shivaji passed away in early April 1680, his mother proclaimed 10-year-old Rajaram as the new ruler of the Marathas, but in the end the throne went to Shivaji's eldest son - Sambhaji , and Soirabay, Rajaram and his wife Dzhankibay were thrown into prison.

In 1689, Sambhaji was captured by the Mughals and executed. On March 12, 1689, Rajaram was crowned as the new lord of the Marathas. Since the Maratha war with the Mughals that besieged the Raigard fortress continued at that time, Rajaram fled to the Jinji fortress, which became the new capital of the Marathas. Soon, the Jinji was besieged by another Mughal army, but the Marathas strongly pressed on it from all sides, and the besiegers often became besieged. After an eight-year siege, the fortress fell in January 1698, but Rajaram and his people were allowed to flee. First, Rajaram fled to Velluru , and from there to Vishalgarh.

In 1700, Rajaram died of an illness in the Sinhagad fortress near Pune . After his death, his widow Tarabai began to rule on behalf of the young son Shivaji II.
