Sapega, Frantisek Xavier

Prince Frantisek Xavier Sapieha ( Polish Franciszek Ksawery Sapieha , 1741/1746 - January 30, 1806 or February 10, 1808 ) - statesman and military leader of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania , the last governor of Smolensk ( 1791 - 1793 ) and Mertsky ( 1793 - 1795 ).

Biography

Representative of the coden line of the Lithuanian magnate clan Sapeg emblem " Fox ". The third son of the governor of Mstislavl, Ignacy Sapieha (until 1721 - 1758 ) and Anna Krasitskaya ( 1707 - 1751 ). He had brothers Jan , Jozef and Caetan Michael .

In the 1750s, Frantisek Xavier Sapieha studied in Warsaw, then began a military career. In 1763 he received the rank of lieutenant of the Pyatigorsk Banner , in 1768 he became a colonel .

Under the patronage of his nephew Casimir Nestor Sapieha in 1791, Frantisek Xavier Sapieha received the titular position of governor of Smolensk and the Order of St. Stanislav. He was considered an opponent of the adoption of the new Polish constitution on May 3, 1791 . He became a member of the Targovitsa Confederation in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania .

In 1793 he became the first and only voivode of Mercy in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania .

Family and Children

Frantisek Xavier Sapega was twice married. In 1768, he married Teresa Sufchinskaya (1744-1827), from whom he had four sons and three daughters:
