The first general election in the Malayan Federation to the Federal Legislative Council was held on July 27, 1955, in anticipation of independence from Great Britain in 1957. Prior to this election, the Federal Legislative Council was appointed by the British High Commissioner in Malaya. In 1954, the newly formed Malay Indian Congress entered the coalition Alliance Party.

As a result of the elections, the Alliance Party won a landslide victory, gaining 71 seats out of 72 seats of the Legislative Council. The only opposition MP was the candidate from the All-Malay Islamist Party, Haji Ahmad Tuan Hussein, who was nicknamed "Mr. Opposition." The turnout was 82.8%.
Abdul Rahman, a member of the Alliance, became the country's Prime Minister. [one]
