Content
AppearanceIt has a variegated color, sometimes it is purely chartreous . The body is long and thin. The blue wings are pointed, which covers a green or turquoise cover. Sometimes at the end of the wings there are black, colored feathers. The body is also mostly green. The head is dark or light. The neck and sternum are of different colors, usually white, brown, reddish, green, yellow, mottled. The eyes are black, around them a thick white ring. On the cheeks an orange-red or just a red round spot. The beak is thick and hook-shaped, usually gray, but there is also a pearl color. Rarely there is a bright coral spot above the beak. The tail is pointed, like wings, red or multi-colored, or lilac, green, brown. Growth about 24 cm. There is no sexual dimorphism. It is almost impossible to distinguish a female from a male.
DistributionThey live in southeast Ecuador .
LifestyleInhabit the rainforests and some of the mountains. Outside the mating season, live in groups of 8 to 50 birds. During the mating season are divided into pairs. They feed on fruits, seeds and berries.
ReproductionThe mating season lasts from April to June. In clutch usually 4-9 eggs. Young hatch after 22-28 days, and leave the nest at the age of 45-60 days.
Threats and securityFor many years it was represented by the only specimen mined in southern Ecuador. Only in 1980, Several birds of this species were found in a tropical forest on the slopes of Eastern Cordillera in southeast Ecuador.
Ecuador declared a protected species. Forests in their habitats are largely altered or destroyed.
