History
In French documents, the local name “Mayazhi” was first written down as Mayé or Mahié , but as a result the writing of Mahé was fixed.
The French East India Company acquired these lands from Raja Badagar in 1724, and built a fort on them. Then these lands were seized by the Marathas , but in 1741 Bertrand Francois de Laburdonne returned these lands to France; and in honor of this event, the name of the city "Mahe" was added to his surname.
In 1793, during the first coalition war, Mahe was taken by British troops under the command of , and returned to France in 1816.
After the formation of an independent India in the French colonies in the Indian subcontinent, a movement began to expand for unification with India. In June 1954, the Mahe administration announced it was joining India. The official agreement on the transfer of land to the former French India was concluded in May 1956, ratified by the French Parliament in May 1962, and the exchange of ratified documents between France and India took place on August 16, 1962. From July 1, 1963, the former French India became the Union Territory of Pondicherry .
