Biography
Boris Kalach was born on August 11, 1923 in the village of Gorodnya (now a city in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine ). In 1939 he graduated from a seven-year school, in 1940 - a school of factory apprenticeship at the Gomel Steam Locomotive Plant, specializing in a metal turner, after which he remained to work at this plant. Since April 1941 he worked as a turner-toolmaker of the Chernihiv machine-tractor station [1] .
At the beginning of World War II, Kalach was in occupation. In March 1942, he managed to establish contact with the partisan detachment of Alexei Fedorov . Soon he was admitted to this detachment and assigned the second machine-gun calculation number. Participated in raids compound Fedorov in the Zhytomyr and Rivne regions. Since April 1943, Kalach served as the squad leader, and later became commander of a sabotage platoon. In the summer and autumn of 1943, the Kalach partisans blew up 54 trains with important cargo, equipment and manpower of the enemy, 12 of which Kalach personally destroyed. The platoon successfully operated before joining the Soviet units. In July 1944, on the instructions of the command , Kalach was abandoned in the German rear and launched active subversive activities there. In November of the same year, he was injured and was in hospital [1] until the end of the war.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 2, 1945, Boris Kalach was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin for exemplary fulfillment of command assignments in the fight against the German invaders, shown courage and heroism, and for special merits in the development of the partisan movement and the Gold Star medal [1] .
After the war, Kalach returned to Gomel . In 1950, he graduated from the Gomel Pedagogical Institute, after which he worked as the director of a secondary school. He died on December 18, 2001 [1] .
Honorary citizen of the Slovak city of Miedzilaborce . He was also awarded the orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, the Red Star and the Belarusian Order "For Service to the Motherland" of the 3rd degree, a number of medals and foreign awards [1] .
