Biography
Valentin Kalabun was born on November 7, 1924 in Mariupol . He graduated from nine classes of high school. In October 1941, he was evacuated to Magnitogorsk , where he worked as a mechanic at the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works . In July 1942, Kalabun was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Since December of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles on the Stalingrad , South , North Caucasus , 4th Ukrainian , 1st Baltic and 3rd Belorussian fronts, and was repeatedly wounded. By January 1945, the senior sergeant Valentin Kalabun was a scout of the 80th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 32nd Guards Rifle Division of the 2nd Guards Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front. He distinguished himself during the battles in East Prussia [1] .
On January 16, 1945, in the battle west of the city of Walterkemen, Calabun was the first to attack, dragging his comrades along, and in the German trench he destroyed 15 and captured 7 more German soldiers and officers. January 23, Calabun destroyed two machine gun points. During one of the battles southwest of Koenigsberg, Kalabun destroyed 6 and captured 23 more German soldiers and officers, and also captured an artillery gun. On April 13, 1945, Kalabun launched an attack on his entire battalion and personally destroyed 10 and captured 17 more German soldiers and officers. On April 16, at the head of a reconnaissance group, Kalabun secretly crept up to the village of Zanglinen, where the German battalion was located, and destroyed 5 German soldiers standing guard. The remaining 260 soldiers and officers led by the battalion commander surrendered [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 29, 1945, for “exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard, Senior Sergeant Valentin Kalabun was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the medal “ Golden Star ” under number 8785 [1] .
After the war ended, Calabun continued his service in the Soviet Army. In 1955, with the rank of senior lieutenant, he was transferred to the reserve. He returned to Mariupol. In 1966, Kalabun graduated from the Simferopol College of Food Processing, after which he headed a shell station, a transport department, and a container shop at the Mariupol Fish Factory. He died on July 20, 1997, was buried in Mariupol [1] .
He was also awarded two orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree, a number of medals [1] .
