Biography
Vasily Kaykin was born on June 9, 1910 in the village of Tyup (now the Tyup district of the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan ). He received his primary education, after which he worked as a tractor driver on a collective farm . In January 1942, Kaykin was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since November of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By January 1945, the guard sergeant Vasily Kaykin commanded a machine gun at the 54th Guards Cavalry Regiment of the 14th Guards Cavalry Division of the 7th Guards Cavalry Corps of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the forcing of the Oder [1] .
On January 29, 1945, Kaikin’s calculation crossed the Oder in the area of Prittag (now Pishtok north-east of Zielona Góra ) and took an active part in repelling several German counterattacks, thanks to which he managed to cross the squadron. On January 30, Kaykin covered up the departure of his comrades in the vicinity of the Altkessel railway station (now Stary-Kiselin ). Having used up ammunition, he blew himself up and the German soldiers surrounding him with a grenade. He was buried in the Polish city of Zagan [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 27, 1945, the senior sergeant Vasily Kaykin was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin , Red Star and Glory of the 3rd degree [1] .
In honor of Kaikin, a monument was erected and a street, a school, a culture and leisure park in the village of Tyup were named [1] .
