The State Library of Turkmenistan ( Turk. Döwlet kitaphanasy ) is the national library of Turkmenistan , located in Ashgabat. Founded in 1895. Included in the structure of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan [3] .

The library maintains a state bibliographic record and maintains a centralized catalog of printed publications and other materials that are part of the single library fund of Turkmenistan.

Statute on Library Law
This is a library of national importance, the main purpose of which is to meet the comprehensive information needs of citizens, as well as the organization of library, bibliographic and scientific information activities in order to preserve the historical memory of the people of Turkmenistan, the development of national and world culture, science, education and education [4] .
The main tasks of the library
- the formation, storage, scientific processing and preservation of the most complete collection of domestic and foreign publications and other materials;
- promoting the development of national science, culture, education and education using various forms of activity stipulated by the Regulations on the National Library
- maintaining a unified state bibliographic register of printed publications and documents;
- carrying out research and scientifically-methodical activities in the field of library science and book science, providing methodological assistance to libraries of Turkmenistan, regardless of their departmental subordination, promoting the professional growth of library personnel;
- international cooperation in the formation and use of world library resources.
History
Opened on August 1, 1885 as the Transcaspian Regional Public Library. Founded by officers of the Russian army. Initially, the library fund was 3000 copies of books in Russian. The library consisted of a department for issuing books to the house (a subscription) and a study room (reading room) [5] .
In 1924 it was transformed into the state republican library.
In the Soviet era bore the name of Karl Marx. In 1969–1974, a library building in the style of Soviet modernism was built in the center of Ashgabat by architects A. R. Akhmedov, B. A. Shpak, V. A. Alekseev [6] . As of January 1, 1970, the funds numbered over 2.7 million units [7] .
In 1991, it was created and renamed in honor of the Turkmen poet Nurmukhamet Andalib on the basis of the State Republican Library of the Turkmen SSR. The book fund in 1991 was 5480989 units. Since 1992, the flow of literature from abroad has ceased.
In 1997, named after the first president of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov. In 2000, at the suggestion of the Turkish Embassy, a Turkish hall was opened. In 2003 the book fund was 5508186 units [8] .
In 2006, the library won a Japanese government grant of $ 200,000 for the supply of audio and video equipment.
The new building was built by the Turkish company GAP Inshaat in 2007 [9] and is included in the single architectural complex of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan . The seven-story building with an interior area of about 24 thousand square meters. On three underground floors are located the book depository. The library can simultaneously receive 1,100 visitors. The library has two conference rooms for 150 and 40 people, an audio-video library, an Internet room, a computer center, bookshops, and rooms for researchers and staff. There are 19 elevators in the building [10] .
In 2009, the conservation and restoration of 50,000 rare and valuable books of the XVI-XIX centuries was carried out at the expense of the American grant [11] . In the same year, with the assistance of the US Embassy, the Internet Center was opened, the library was connected to the Virtual Silk Road fiber optic Internet network [12] .
In April 2013, it was renamed the State Library of Turkmenistan [3] .
