History
This painting was first exhibited at the 3rd exhibition of the Impressionists in April 1877 [1] [3] , along with other paintings by Caillebotte, among which, in particular, were “ Paris Street in rainy weather ” and “Painters of facades”.
Description
The painting depicts part of the Bridge of Europe, which was built in the second half of the 1860s. This bridge is located above the railway lines at the Paris Saint-Lazare station. In the center of the bridge is Europe Square ( French Place de l'Europe ), which is approached from different sides by six streets named after European cities: London , Vienna , Madrid , Constantinople , St. Petersburg , Liège (formerly Berlin Street) . The point from which the view shown in the picture opens is on Vienna Street ( Fr. Rue de Vienne ), which in the background (behind Europe Square) goes into St. Petersburg Street ( Fr. Rue de Saint-Pétersbourg ) [1] .
The station itself is not visible in the picture - the artist depicted the fence, sidewalk, and part of the roadway of the bridge. At the fence, turning away, stands a man, past whom a dog passes, which is in the foreground of the picture. Well-dressed man and woman are walking towards the viewer along the sidewalk [4] . Through the fence, another part of the bridge is visible, along which London Street ( Fr. Rue de Londres ) approaches the Europe Square [1] .
The perspective of the picture is unusual - long-range plans are reduced, and close objects are enlarged, which gives the impression of using a wide-angle camera lens . Caillebotte also used a similar technique in his other famous painting - “ Paris Street in rainy weather ” [5] .
