Fatou Bensouda ( born Fatou Bensouda ; born January 31, 1961 in Banjul , The Gambia ) is a Gambian lawyer and statesman, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court [1] .

In 1986, she graduated with honors from IFE University (now Obafemi Avolovo University ) in Nigeria , receiving a bachelor of law degree . She also studied at the Nigerian School of Law. In 1991, she received a master 's degree in law from the Institute of International Law of the Sea in Malta [2] .
From 1980 to 1997, she worked as a lawyer in the courts of the Gambia. In 1997-1998 - the General Solicitor of the Gambia, then in 1998-2000 - the Prosecutor General and Minister of Justice of the Gambia [3] .
Bensuda began her international career at the International Tribunal for Rwanda in 2002, having worked first as a legal consultant and then as a legal attorney [3] .
On August 8, 2004, she was elected deputy prosecutor (for criminal prosecution) of the International Criminal Court by an overwhelming majority of the Assembly of States Parties. After the resignation in 2012, Luis Moreno Ocampo , replaced him as Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, receiving relevant support from the Assembly of States Parties [4] [5] [6] .
