The International 2013

The International 2013 is the third Dota 2 tournament by The International , held by Valve , which took place in Seattle from 3 to 12 August 2013 [1] . The initial prize pool amounted to 1,600,000 US dollars, and the additional collection of tickets amounted to another 1,274,407 US dollars. The prize fund, at the time of 2013, was the largest in the entire history of eSports [2] [3] . Famous commentators were invited to cover the tournament, including live video broadcasts (via the Twitch.tv service).

Members

The tournament traditionally involved 16 teams. Thirteen teams from all over the world received an invitation to the tournament, and two more were selected using the Wild Card Qualification online qualifications (held on May 13–19, 2013 [for the west] and on May 20–30, 2013 [for the east]); The last invitation was drawn on August 3 in Seattle between the teams that took second places in qualifications, it was received by the team   Rattlesnake, beating the team   Quantic Gaming.

Western qualifications

In the western qualification 8 teams took part, which were divided into two groups. Games in each group were held on the Double Elimination system without a final. The teams that took the first two places in their groups got into the playoffs, which was also conducted by the Double Elimination system, where the winner of the top grid had no advantage in the final [4] .

According to the results of the qualifying games team   Mousesports got a place in the tournament, but   DD.Dota got the opportunity to compete for the last place with the team   Rattlesnake, which ranked second in the Eastern qualification [4] . Shortly after qualifying, the DD.Dota team joined the organization Quantic Gaming and changed its name [5] .

According to the results of the qualifying games team   LGD Gaming got a spot in the tournament, and   Rattlesnake got the opportunity to compete for the last place with the team   Quantic Gaming, which ranked second in the Western qualification [4] .

The Interactive Compendium

On May 7, 2013, an interactive virtual book The Interactive Compendium [7] was added to the in-game store, which is dedicated to The International 2013 . The players who bought the book were given the opportunity to participate in various polls and contests, and were also awarded certain prizes. The price of the book was $ 9.99 or 299 rubles. The organizers reported that 25% of the proceeds from the sale of books will be added to the prize fund of the tournament, which initially amounted to $ 1.6 million. As the tournament prize pool increased, book owners received unique gifts.

The first level of 100 thousand dollars was conquered the very next day after the start of sales [8] . For this, players received a powerful bonus to their game experience until the end of The International.

The second level of 250 thousand dollars was taken on May 12. For this, players received unique modifications for the tournament courier [9] .

The third bar of 400 thousand dollars was taken on May 16. For this, players received a unique game interface.

The fourth bar of 600 thousand dollars was taken on May 28. For this, the players received a unique mockery for the characters.

The fifth bar of 800 thousand dollars was taken on June 27 [10] . For this, the owners of the collection got the opportunity to choose 8 players from the participants of The International 2013, who played against each other in a 1-by-1 mini-tournament.

The sixth bar of $ 1 million was taken on July 22 [11] . For this, players received an in-game treasure item, the discovery of which gives one of five new items of the Immortal class.

From the sale of collections, the prize fund was increased by $ 1,274,407 to $ 2,874,407, which was the largest prize pool in the history of eSports at that time [2] [3] .

Tournament course

The International 2013 tournament began at midnight from 2 to 3 August with a series of games between the teams   Rattlesnake and   Quantic Gaming, the results of which determined the last participant of the competition. 3-1 team won   Rattlesnake [12] [13] .

Single Tournament

As part of The International 2013 , a 1-to-1 mini-tournament was held among 8 players from the invited teams. Participants of the tournament were determined by voting among the owners of Compendiums [13] .

All-Stars Match

Also within the framework of the tournament on August 8, the All-Stars match was held among the players chosen by the owners of the Compendiums. The game was not serious, rarely used heroes were chosen. With a score of 65-32, the team of the forces of light won [14] [15] .

Group stage

All participants were divided into two groups of 8 teams each. From 3 to 5 August, a group stage was held, in which each of the teams played two games with all opponents from their group. According to the results of these games, the top 4 teams from each group hit the top grid, the rest - the bottom. In group A due to the equal points between the teams   LGD and   Dignitas held an extra match, which was won by the LGD team, thereby securing a place in the top bracket [12] [13] .

Play Off

From August 7 to 12, Double Elimination play-off games took place. Up to two victories were played in the top grid. In the lower bracket, 1-3 rounds of the game were held until one victory, in 4-6 rounds - up to two victories. The grandfinal was played to three wins, where the winner of the top grid had no advantages.
