Biography

Peter Kagykin was born on November 12 (in a new style - 25 ) November 1912 in the village of Volchno-Burlinskoye (now Krutikhinsky district of the Altai Territory ). He received his primary education, after which he worked as an assistant at a rural carpenter, and later a carpenter at the construction of the Kuznetsk Metallurgical Plant . When the plant was built, Kagykin began working on it as a metal pourer. In 1933 - 1936 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1939, Kagykin moved to the village of Leninsky in the Jewish Autonomous Region of the Khabarovsk Territory . In June 1941, he was re-drafted into the army. Initially, he served in the border troops, but in the summer of 1942 volunteered to go to the front. Since October 1942 - on the fronts of World War II. He participated in the battle of Kursk , the Oryol operation , the battle of the Dnieper , the liberation of the Byelorussian SSR , Poland , and battles in Germany . He was wounded twice in battles. By April 1945, Sergeant Pyotr Kagykin was the deputy gun commander of the 1955th Fighter-Antitank Regiment of the 40th Separate Fighter-Antitank Brigade of the 3rd Shock Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the assault on Berlin [1] .

On April 28, 1945, as part of the assault group, Kagykin was one of the first to cross the Spree . During the battles in the Berlin streets, he destroyed more than 10 German soldiers and officers. On April 30, 1945, he, together with a group of fighters, hoisted a red flag over the Reichstag [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 15, 1946, for "exemplary performance of command missions and courage and heroism in battles with the German invaders," Sergeant Pyotr Kagykin was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 8966 [1] .

In December 1945, Kagykin was demobilized, after which he returned to Leninsky. Later he moved to Moscow , where he died suddenly on December 25, 1951 . He was buried at the Vagankovsky cemetery in Moscow [1] .

He was also awarded the Order of the Red Star and Glory of the 3rd degree, a number of medals [1] .

Memory

In honor of Kagykin, a street was named in his small homeland in the village of Volchno-Burlinsky of the Altai Territory and in the Leninsky Autonomous Okrug, a frontier post in the Far Eastern Border District [1] . In 2015, his name was immortalized on a separate granite pylon of the Alley of Heroes in Victory Square in Birobidzhan [2] .
