Biography

Ilya Kaverin was born on May 2 (15), 1910 in the village of Astara (now a city in Azerbaijan ). He received his primary education, after which he worked in the fishing industry. In 1941, Kaverin was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. By November 1943, Junior Sergeant Ilya Kaverin was a tank driver of the 74th Tank Regiment of the 71st Mechanized Brigade of the 9th Mechanized Corps of the 3rd Guards Tank Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Kiev [1] .

During the breakthrough of the German defense near Kiev, Kaverin destroyed several enemy artillery guns and mortars and went deep into the rear of the enemy. In one of the battles, the Kaverina tank was shot down, all crew members were killed, except for himself. So, in a battle for the village of Khotiv in the Kiev-Svyatoshinsky district, he defeated a German convoy, destroying near the platoon of enemy infantry and 12 vehicles [1] .
