Biography
Roberto Matosas, born in Mersedes in 1940, began playing football at the local Bristol team. In 1959 he moved to the youth structure of "Penarolya", where he debuted at a professional level a year later. Already in the very first year, Matosas together with the team won the first ever Libertadores Cup. In 1961, Penarol repeated his success, adding also to the trophy collection and winning the Intercontinental Cup. However, Matosas himself did not play in three matches against the Portuguese Benfica , although he was in the bid.
In 1965, Roberto moved to the Argentine River Plate. It was one of the most expensive transfers in world football at that time. Together with the "Millionaires", the Uruguayan reached the 1966 Libertadores Cup final, but failed to become the champion of Argentina. From 1961 to 1973 Matosas spent 78 matches in the Libertadores Cup and scored 6 goals [2] .
In 1969, Matosas returned to Penarol - this was largely due to the fact that the coaching staff of the Uruguay national team focused primarily on the players who played in the Uruguayan championship. Returning home helped Matosas get into the team at the 1970 World Cup.
He completed his career Matosas in North America - in 1973-1974. he played for rookie Examples of Mexico San Luis, then spent 1 season in Toluca, and in 1976 was a playing coach for the San Antonio Thunder.
From March 23, 1963 to February 10, 1971, Roberto Matosas played 20 matches for the Uruguay national team. Together with her, he took the 4th place at the 1970 World Championships (at that time, bronze medals were awarded to the team for fourth place), having spent all 6 matches played by Celeste in the tournament.
At the end of his football career, he worked as a coach, leading such teams as Veracruz and Monterrey.
