History
The Botanical Garden was founded in 1955 at the University of Joensuu (today - the University of Eastern Finland ), in 1985 it was transferred to a new building, where it is located to this day. The main purpose of opening the botanical garden was the need for scientific research in biology and forestry , but today the volume of scientific research has slightly decreased. In recent years, the botanical garden has become an attractive tourist attraction.
Overview
Almost all the plants in the botanical garden were grown from seeds obtained from other botanical gardens and research centers and institutes around the world. The total area of the greenhouse space is 570 m², it is divided into five sectors that simulate different climatic conditions:

Butterflies
In the spring-summer season, from early April to mid-October, butterflies fly freely in the temperate zone sector, and visitors have the opportunity to get acquainted with all stages of the development of butterflies - from the larva to the dying butterfly. The life cycle of a butterfly is small and ranges from only a few days to several weeks.
Butterflies are imported to Botania from a large butterfly farm in Stratford-upon-Avon (UK).
