Tragic idol

Tragic Idol is the 13th studio album of the English metal band Paradise Lost . The album was released on Century Media Records on April 23, 2012 in Europe and April 24, 2012 in North America [6] . The album was released in several formats. In support of the album, Paradise Lost went on a UK concert tour. On this tour, they were accompanied by the Insomnium group [7] . Tragic Idol's album is more straightforward and more melodic than Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us , at the same time it is more personal and thoughtful. This is a record of loss and honesty. In the process of recording, the group wanted, getting rid of unnecessary jewelry, again to find the quintessence of their sound. Thus, Tragic Idol is practically devoid of piano sound and orchestral components and is extremely saturated with guitar parts [8] . Guitarist Greg Mackintosh announced the following about the album: “The new CD was again produced by Jens Bogren. The disc was influenced by classic doom metal and classic metal. I would say that this disc is more melodic than the previous record, at the same time it retains the severity inherent in the previous record. There are a lot of guitar solos and melodies on it ” [2] . This album is Paradise Lost's first studio album, which was featured in a studio recording by Adrian Erlandson, a drummer who joined the band in 2009.

Record

The album was written before the band started recording at the end of 2011. The group started writing new material, speaking in 2011 as part of the Draconian Times tour in support of the re-release of the album of the same name [9] . To some extent, the sound of the Draconian Times influenced the appearance of the music of the upcoming album. Work at the secluded Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire in England lasted 4 weeks. Chapel Studios is a converted old chapel. Specific studio equipment, an analogue control panel, as well as Neve's consoles and components made it possible to get a pleasant warm natural sound of guitars [10] . During these four weeks, Chapel Studios was a residential studio. The band members spent a lot of time to achieve a certain sound of guitars, drums and bass guitars even at the stage of studio recording. To produce the album, the band invited Jens Bogren, who worked on the previous studio album Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us in Sweden. Jens came to the UK to meet band members at Chapel Studios. After that, Jens Bogren's assistant, Johan, was involved in the recording, and then continued to work on the album in Sweden [10] . Nick Holmes recorded vocal parts in the personal studio of Jens Bogren in Sweden. Jens also mixed the album. It took several days to mix each composition [8] .

Graphic Design

The album's design and the artwork presented on the cover of Tragic Idol were created by Valnoir, a French designer, owner of the Paris-based Metastasis studio. A proposal for this collaboration was made by Paradise Lost Record by Century Media Records [9] . At every step in the development of the booklet’s design, Valnuar created freehand drafts, then scanned them and sent them to the group. The group voiced its reaction, then the process was repeated. Thus, Paradise Lost was initially involved in the design of the album [10] . The album was released in several versions, sustained in one concept, but differing in design details. Limited Edition is decorated with printing using gold. The color design of vinyls sold in different countries (dark blue version and white version in Germany, white vinyl in France, black vinyl, marble-sand version of the group and golden vinyl in the official store of the group in the UK) varies [11] .

Video

Two videos were released in support of the album. Before shooting the video “Honesty in Death”, the band met with the director, Matt Green, and described the cinematic genre that they like and the style they want [9] . The group wanted to create visual images resembling the video sequence of the film “ The Road ” [10] . According to Greg Mackintosh, the visual series of the clip reflects the theme of the song, something that sometimes absolute honesty does not appear until people lose, or are in danger of losing, what is closest to them [8] . The video for the song “Fear of Impending Hell” was shot by Steve Edmondson and released in September 2012.
