This unit was founded by order of the emperor Diocletian for about 300 years, together with the V and VI Parthian legions . It is interesting that the Legion received the nickname “Parthian” by the name of a longtime adversary of Rome in the East, who ruled the Parthian dynasty in Iran, which was overthrown by the Sassanid dynasty several decades before the founding of the legion.
Apparently, the legion was recruited from the natives of the eastern provinces. Together with the III Parthian Legion, he was stationed in the osroensky city of Circessius at the mouth of Khabur in western Mesopotamia. At the beginning of the V century, it is mentioned in Notitia Dignitatum and was under the command of the Duchs Osroena. IV Parthian Legion - the legion of which the most recent references have been preserved. It continued to exist even during the reign of the emperor of the Byzantine Empire of Mauritius . At that time, the legion was stationed in Beroe . Soon after, he was apparently disbanded.
