The first ever Shanghai auto show was held in 1985 ^[1] . The exhibition area was 15,000 square meters.

Due to the rapidly growing number of foreign brands in the Chinese market, the Shanghai auto show has become one of the leading international auto shows along with the Detroit , Frankfurt , Paris and Tokyo auto shows . In 2001, the event moved to the Shanghai New International Exhibition Center ( SNIEC ).

In June 2004, the Shanghai Motor Show was the first Chinese auto show to join the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry .

Since 2015, the show has been located at the Shanghai National Exhibition & Convention Center , located next to Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport .

Since the first Shanghai Motor Show, the show has gained international status and has become one of the largest exhibitions in Asia and the world. Annually, at the exhibitions in Beijing and Shanghai, the newest products of the global automotive industry make their debut.

2005

The 11th International Auto Show Shanghai 2005 was held from April 22 to 28, 2005 ^[2] .

2007

The car dealership in Shanghai 2007 was held from April 20 to 28. The show attracted more than 1300 participants from 21 countries. The exhibition area was 140,000 square meters, which exceeded the values ​​of the previous exhibition.

At the event, held under the slogan "The perfect combination of man, car and nature ", 868 cars were presented, including 265 from foreign manufacturers (130 of them were imported directly from abroad) and 603 vehicles from Chinese companies. As part of the show, the world debuts of 5 new cars took place, more than 20 concept cars and 10 cars with alternative energy sources were presented ^[3] .

Over the entire period of the exhibition, the showroom was visited by more than 500,000 visitors from 108 countries and regions.

2009

The 13th automobile exhibition in Shanghai started on April 20, 2009. Press days took place on April 20-21, days for the public on April 22-28. The total exhibition area was 170,000 square meters. m., including 11 internal and several external pavilions.

2011

In 2011, the Shanghai Motor Show was held from April 21 to 28. 95 companies took part in it, including Chinese and foreign manufacturers, as well as joint ventures. The total area of ​​the exhibition was 230 thousand square meters. The exhibition space of the Volkswagen Group has occupied more than 8500 square meters. m., where cars of such brands as Volkswagen , Audi , Skoda , Bentley, Lamborghini , Bugatti and Seat were presented. The Great Wall Motors Company brought 20 cars that are located on an area of ​​more than 2000 square meters. m

2013

In 2013, the car dealership was held from April 21 to 29. The event covered 280 thousand square meters of exhibition space, 17 indoor pavilions. The show gathered 2,000 Chinese and foreign exhibits from 18 countries and regions. About 1,300 vehicles were on display at the event, including 69 concept cars and 91 vehicles with alternative energy sources. As part of the Shanghai Motor Show, 111 new models debuted ^[6] .

In addition to 813,000 visitors, the show attracted 10,493 journalists from 2,718 domestic and foreign news media organizations who provided reports from the scene ^[6] .

2015

In 2015, the 16th Shanghai Motor Show started on April 20 from the day of the press, and from April 21-29 its doors were open to the public. The venue was the Shanghai National Congress Center. The car showroom occupied 17 exhibition halls, and the total exhibition area exceeded 280 thousand square meters. This year, the organizers for the first time for events of this kind decided to abandon the female models, and also banned children from entering ^{[9] [10]} . Such restrictions were introduced after the incident in Beijing , when a five-year-old child started the engine of the Tesla Model S exhibition, which almost led to an accident ^[11] .

According to the organizers, in 2015, about two thousand car manufacturers from 18 countries took part in the Shanghai exhibition: among them are brands of local concerns SAIC Group, Dongfeng Motor, GAC Group and BAIC Motor, as well as global companies - Volkswagen Group , General Motors , Chrysler , PSA Peugeot-Citroen and others ^[11] . However, premium European brands did not show almost a single world premiere in Shanghai. Among them are companies such as Rolls-Royce , Bentley Motors , Ferrari , Lamborghini , Aston Martin , Maserati .
