Biography
Born in Pisa, graduated in 1994 from the University of Pisa (specializing in political science) and the School of Studies of St. Anne , where he received in 2001 a Ph.D degree under European Union law. For a long time he was engaged in science, worked as a professor at a private university Carlo Cattaneo at Castellanza (2001-2003), the School of Research of St. Anne (2003), a visiting professor at the Higher Commercial School of Paris (2004).
Enrico's uncle, Gianni Letta, was one of S. Berlusconi 's high-ranking assistants.
Political career
Enrico Letta has been involved in political activities since the early 1990s as part of the Christian Democratic Party , and after its dissolution in 1994, in the Italian People's Party . He was president of the Youth of the European People's Party in 1991-1995. In 1994, he joined the Italian People's Party , where he made a quick career, becoming in 1997 the party's deputy secretary (leader) at the age of 32, and in 1998 he was appointed Minister for European Union Affairs in D'Alem’s office. In the 2001 parliamentary elections, Margaretka was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies from the centrist party : Democracy is freedom [1] [2] [3] .
From 2004 to 2006 he was a member of the European Parliament , in the European Parliament was a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs [4] . In 2006, he left the European Parliament and took the post of Secretary of the Council of Ministers in the second cabinet of Prodi .
He became one of the founders of the Democratic Party ; in 2007, Letta took third place in the leadership election with 11% of the vote [5] . Since 2009, he has been the party's deputy secretary (leader) Pierre Luigi Bersani .
On April 24, 2013, President Giorgio Napolitano invited E. Letta to head the Italian government to put an end to the crisis that developed after the elections of February 24–25, 2013 [6] .
On April 27, 2013, Enrico Letta introduced to the President of the country Giorgio Napolitano a new composition of the government , which includes 7 women [7] . The next day, the government was sworn in.
February 14, 2014 made a statement that he had resigned from his post as Prime Minister of Italy [8] . Letta decided to resign after the Democratic Party supported the proposal of party leader Matteo Renzi to change the Italian government. Letta himself was not present at the party members' vote on the resignation of the government, saying that he did not want to influence the party’s decision [9] . Italian President Giorgio Napolitano accepted the resignation of Enrico Letta [10] [11] .
In March 2017, he announced his support for the current Minister of Justice, Andrea Orlando, in the upcoming elections of the new Democratic Party leader, appointed due to the resignation of Matteo Renzi [12] .
