The supreme muftius of Saud Arabia ( Arabic)المفتي العامّ للمملكة العربية السّعودية ) is the highest religious position in Saudi Arabia . The supreme mufti is appointed personally by the King . At the moment, the High Mufti is Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah Al ash-Sheikh (3rd in a row).

Role in society
The supreme mufti has a strong influence and power in the country. His main activity is to issue legal and social fatwas [1] . The Saudi state system depends largely on the opinion of the High Mufti [1] .
History
The first Supreme Mufti was appointed by King Abdulaziz ibn Saud in 1953 [2] . They became Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Al ash-Sheikh . Two of the three supreme muftis of Saudi Arabia were members of the Al-Sheikh family (“The Sheikh’s Family”), descendants of the Salafi ulema of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab [3] . Abdul-Aziz ibn Baz did not belong to this genus [4] .
In 1969, King Faisal Ibn Abdul-Aziz abolished the post of High Mufti and transferred his authority to the Ministry of Justice. The position was restored in 1993 with the appointment of Abdul-Aziz Ibn Baz [5] . Currently, the position is occupied by Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdullah Al ash-Sheikh , appointed in 1999 [1] .
