Joseph Sombati ( German Josef Szombathy ; June 11, 1853 , Vienna - November 9, 1943 , Vienna ) - Austrian archaeologist, known as the discoverer of Venus of Willendorf in 1908 .

He graduated from the Vienna Polytechnic Institute ( 1874 ), then worked as an assistant at its Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, which included Edward Süss as his mentor. In 1878 - 1919 Researcher at the Vienna Museum of Natural History , since 1882 was in charge of the department of the prehistoric and early historical period . Since 1879 he participated in numerous archaeological excavations in the territory of Austria-Hungary . He was in the leadership of various scientific societies, was president of the Austrian Tourist Club.
