Biography
Ilya Ignatenko was born on August 2, 1920 in the village of Shipunovo (now the Abat district of the Tyumen region ). He graduated from seven classes of school in the town of Shchors of the Chernigov region of the Ukrainian SSR , after which he worked there in the locomotive depot. In 1940, Ignatenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . He served in the Transcaucasian Military District . He participated in the introduction of Soviet troops in Iran. From September 1941 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He participated in the battles in Ukraine, the Kharkov operation of 1942, the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk , the battles of the Great Luke and Nevel . By the summer of 1944, the senior sergeant Ilya Ignatenko of the Guard was the senior intelligence officer of the 138th Guards Artillery Regiment of the 67th Guards Rifle Division of the 6th Guards Army of the 1st Baltic Front . Distinguished during the Belarusian operation [1] .
On June 23, 1944, in the village of Sirotino of the Shumilinsky District of the Vitebsk Region of the Belarusian SSR, Ignatenko discovered and transmitted the coordinates of 3 artillery, 2 mortar batteries and 14 firing points. On June 24, he crossed the Dnieper in the area of the village of Bui, Beshenkovichi district, and corrected the fire of the artillery battalions, which contributed to the successful advancement of the Soviet units [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated July 22, 1944, forcing the Western Dvina to cross, firmly consolidating the bridgehead on its shore, exemplary performance of military tasks of the command on the front of the fight against the German invaders and displayed at the same time courage and heroism, the senior sergeant Ilya Ignatenko was honored the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 3851 [1] .
In one of the battles for the liberation of Polotsk, Ignatenko was seriously wounded. After the hospital, he was sent to study at the Chelyabinsk Tank Technical School, which he graduated in 1946 . In the same year in the rank of captain, he was transferred to the reserve. In 1951 Ignatenko graduated from Kharkov law school. He lived in Chernigov , worked in local prosecutors. He died on November 16, 1983, and was buried in Yatsevo cemetery in Chernigov [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Star and a number of medals [1] .
