Deira (Dubai)

Deira is one of the oldest in Dubai. A significant number of small and medium-sized trading establishments are concentrated here, mainly belonging to immigrants from Pakistan and India. Also here, in the northwestern part of Deira, is the famous Gold Souk , a huge jewelry market. The western border of Deira is the Dubai Creek Natural Canal, which divides the city into two unequal parts. On the canal, on the banks of Deira, there is a small port - Port Said, from which cargo transportation to the west coast is carried out on traditional dhow ships, as well as group cruise trips of tourists. The canal also runs river boats and taxis. In the north, Deira is washed by the waters of the Persian Gulf , in the east it (in the broad sense of the understanding, like the entire north-eastern part of the city) borders on the emirate of Sharjah . From the south, Dubai International Airport is adjacent to Deira. In the 1960s and 1970s, Deira was a shopping center in Dubai, currently the business center has moved to the west side of Dubai Creek from the city and is located along the Sheikh Zayed highway . However, now in Deira intensive construction is underway again, a number of skyscrapers and modern bridges over the canal ( Clock Tower, Maktoum Bridge, etc. ) have been erected. In the marine area off the coast of Deira, a project is planned for an artificial island - Deira Island .
