History

Until the end of the 18th century, the market square in the Old Town was considered the central place and the heart of Warsaw. It arose at the end of the 13th century, along with the foundation of the city. Historically, the town hall was located in the center of the square, the first mention of which dates back to 1429 . The building was often reconstructed due to constant fires. In 1817, it was disassembled.

The buildings surrounding it were made in the Gothic style and existed until the great fire of 1607 . Later they were restored at first partially in the Renaissance style , and then in 1701 - in the Baroque style, by the talent of the architect Tilman van Gameren .

The Town Hall, also located on the square, was reconstructed in 1580 in the style of Polish mannerism according to the design of Antonio de Ralia. The architecture of the town hall was very similar to the design of similar buildings in Poland (for example, the town hall in Szydlowiec ). It was decorated with attic and 4 side towers. The clock tower, decorated with an arcade , loggias , was crowned with a sharp spire, characteristic of Warsaw's mannerism architecture (see the Royal Castle or the (not preserved) wooden manor of the Opalinsky family in the New Town ).

The area was bombarded by the German Luftwaffe during the Polish Wehrmacht campaign of 1939 and was destroyed after the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising ( 1944 ).

Reconstruction

July 22, 1953 [3] a unique reconstruction of the square was completed - it was, in fact, recreated from the images from the pre-war era. Now this place is considered one of the most popular sights of Warsaw [4] .

The monument to the Warsaw Mermaid, moved from the market square in 1928 , returned to its historical place in November 1999 .

On February 29, 2012, as part of the restoration program, the reconstruction of basements at Rynek Starego Miasta 28/42 - Descartes Party, with a total area of 1395 m² and an investment of 19 387 042 zlotys [5], was completed .
