Playa de las Américas ( Spanish: Playa de las Américas , “the beach of the Americas”) is a purpose-built resort in the southern and southwestern part of the municipality of Arona , bordering the neighboring municipality of Adeje in the west of the island of Tenerife , one of the Canary Islands . The resort was built in the 1960s near the city of Los Cristianos and stretches to the northwest up to Costa Adeje. The resort area includes bars, nightclubs, restaurants, attractions and beaches, most of which are artificial with sand brought from Africa, since the local sand is black of volcanic origin.
