Biography
Karlis Baumanis was born on May 3, 1916 in the village of Rauna in northeastern Latvia , in the family of the owner of the bakery Jekab Baumanis.
In the first half of the 1930s, the family moved to the city of Limbazi .
He graduated from the Limbazu gymnasium, sculpture department of the Latvian State Academy of Fine Arts ( Theodor Zalkalna studio, 1947). He was an associate professor at the Latvian State University and the Riga Polytechnic Institute (1946-1976).
He was married to the artist Birute Baumane .
Creativity
Karlis Baumanis participated in exhibitions since 1944 .
Created works in all genres of sculpture:
- Sculptural portraits: "The Poet K. Cruise " (1957), "Architect A. Birznieks " (1958), "Professor of Medicine K. Rudzitis" (1967), "Beethoven" (1969).
- Monumental sculpture: a monument to Rainis in the village of Rubeni, Jekabpils region (1969), incarnation of a monument to Alfred Kalnins in stone based on a sketch by Theodor Zalkaln (1979), a memorial complex in Limbazi (1995), a monument to Garlib Merkel in Ledurg (2005).
- Memorial ensemble at the burial site of prominent party and Soviet leaders in the northern part of the Rainis cemetery . Co-authors - sculptor Aivars Gulbis , architect Ivar Strautmanis ( 1971 ).
- Memorial monuments : architect E. Shtalberg (1961), pianist V. Soest (1963), artist J. Liepins (1967), sculptor T. Zalkalns (1976).
- Decorative sculpture: “Composition” (1970), “Meditation” (1990), “Deformed Cube” (1991).
- In the field of medal art created more than a hundred bilateral medals.
He has published about 40 articles on the history of art. The author of the monograph "Theodor Zalkalns" (1966) [1] [2] .
