Brestel, Rudolph

Rudolf Brestel was born on May 16, 1816 in Vienna; studied at the Olomouc and Vienna universities , a mathematician. In the years 1836-1840 worked as an assistant at the Vienna Observatory . After spending a short time as a professor of physics at the University of Olmuc, he began to read mathematics at the University of Vienna from 1844 ^[1] .

During the Revolution of 1848–1849 he was elected to the Reichstag and held liberal positions. After the suppression of the revolution was subjected to political persecution; as a professor, suspended from teaching. He acted as a publicist. In 1861 he became a deputy of the Lower Austria’s Landtag ; in 1864–1881 he was a deputy of the Reichsrat .

December 30, 1867 at the initiative of Emperor Franz Joseph was appointed Minister of Finance of Cisleytania. While in office, he took measures to reduce the state budget deficit, pursued a policy of raising taxes, and made efforts to restructure the state debt.

Rudolf Brestel died on March 3, 1881 in his hometown.

In 1883, an alley in the Ottakring district of Vienna (district 16), Brestelgasse, was named after Brestel.
