History

In Ephesus, from the very beginning of Christianity, there was a community that the Apostle Paul mentions in his epistle. The first bishop of Ephesus is considered an apostle from seventy Timothy , a former disciple of the apostle Paul, who ordained him bishop.

In the 4th century, the diocese of Ephesus became part of the Patriarchate of Constantinople . During the reform of Diocletian, the city of Ephesus became the center of the Roman province of Asia of the eponymous diocese . In 431, the Third Ecumenical Council was held in Ephesus, attended by 200 bishops. In 449, the Second Ephesian Cathedral was held in Ephesus, which was not recognized by the Ecumenical Church.

Since 1318, the Ephesian Archdiocese has been the titular archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church.
