Biography
Ivan Sedykh was born in 1904 in Tver . He received an incomplete secondary education, after which he worked at a medical institute. In 1927 - 1930 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In October 1942, Sedykh was again drafted into the army. Since December of the same year - on the fronts of World War II, he commanded a division of the 78th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 25th Guards Rifle Division of the 6th Army of the South-Western Front [1] .
On March 2, 1943, Sedykh, as part of his platoon, commanded by Lieutenant Pyotr Nikolayevich Shironin , participated in repelling counterattacks by German tank and infantry units at a railway crossing on the southern outskirts of Taranovka village, Zmievsky district, Kharkov region, Ukrainian SSR . The Sedykh squad was the first to take the hit. At a critical moment in the battle, when the enemy’s tanks came close to the trenches of the Shironins, Sedykh and his comrades Skvortsov and Pavlov rushed to them with grenades. In that battle, they died, but managed to stop the tanks. All of them were buried in a mass grave at the battlefield [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 18, 1943 for sergeant Ivan Sedykh posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union for the “exemplary performance of command missions of the command on the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard. He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .
