Ras Al Ain

Ras al-Ain ( Arabic. راس العين , sir. ܪܝܫ ܥܝܢܐ ) or Serekaniye ( Kurd. Serêkaniyê ) is a city in northeastern Syria located in the Hasek governorate. The administrative center of the homonymous district . Homeland of Sergius Reshaynsky (d. 536), a prominent scientist, thinker, physician and translator.

Description

The city is located in the northwestern part of the governorate, in the immediate vicinity of the border with Turkey , east of the city of Ceylanpynar , at a distance of approximately 67 km northwest of the city of Hasek , the administrative center of the province and 500 km north-east of Damascus , the capital of the country. The absolute height is 351 m above sea level [1] .

Syrian Civil War

During the Civil War in Syria , a city populated mainly by Kurds , has become an arena of hostilities.

On November 9, 2012, the city was liberated by the Syrian government forces from the Islamist mercenaries who captured it two days before [3] . On November 12, 2012, the Syrian Air Force struck the city, while one of the missiles fell on adjacent Turkish territory [4] . On November 13, 2012, fierce clashes took place in the city between government troops and Islamic Islamist mercenaries that infiltrated from Turkish territory [5] . On November 20, 2012, clashes between Kurdish militias and Islamist mercenaries began in Ras al Ain. The conflict was caused by the firing of militants by a demonstration, whose participants demanded that they leave the city. Killed 10 people, including the regional leader of the Kurdish Democratic Union, Abed Khalil [6] ;

On January 19, 2013, fierce clashes between fighters of the Kurdish militia and militants of the Jebhat al-Nusra group began in the city [7] .

On October 12, 2019, the Turkish Armed Forces with the support of the Free Syrian Army on the fourth day of Operation Source of Peace established control over the city of Ras al-Ain [8] . In October 2019, Kurdish armed groups shot 35 people in the city for refusing to fight against Turkey [9] .
