In 1853, by the decision of Mayor of Arcachon Adalber Degann , a Neo - Renaissance palace was built at the edge of the beach [1] . The palace became a meeting place for representatives of the European nobility and the bourgeoisie on holiday in Arcachon, and in 1859 it was proposed to the French emperor Napoleon III , who two years earlier approved the decree of the independent status of Arcachon commune . After the death of the mayor, the chateau again became a private residence. In 1903, Château Deganne was sold and equipped as a casino .
During the Second World War, the building was requisitioned by arranging barracks in it; during the war the building was severely damaged. After the war, the château of Degans was restored and a casino was again set up within its walls, as well as theatrical performances, which were attended by famous guests. Chateau Deganne remained the only casino in Arcachon after the Moorish casino burned down in a fire in 1977 [2] .
