Biography
Grigory Dmitrievich Prokopenko was born on January 31, 1924 in the village of Baitsury, Kursk province (now - as a part of the Grusschansky rural settlement of the Borisov district , Belgorod region , Russia ) in a peasant family. G. D. Prokopenko was drafted into the ranks of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army by the Borisov District Military Commissariat of the Kursk Region [2] on March 11, 1943. With a breakthrough of the enemy’s defenses near the village of Puscha-Voditsa and during the further offensive against Kiev, the Red Army soldier G. D. Prokopenko with his calculation repeatedly advanced to an open position and under fierce fire of the enemy suppressed the enemy’s fire weapons. On November 11, 1943, while repelling the enemy’s counterattack in the Fastov area, Grigory Dmitrievich was seriously wounded and evacuated to the hospital. For the exemplary performance of the combat tasks of the command on the front of the struggle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown by the decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet of January 10, 1944, Red Army Prokopenko Grigory Dmitrievich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
About half a year G.D. Prokopenko was treated in hospitals. After being discharged from a medical institution, the Red Armyman, who had not recovered from his injury, was sent as a sapper to the 924th separate sapper corps battalion. As part of the 7th Rifle Corps, the battalion participated in the liberation of Belarus and Poland ( Byelorussian and Vistula-Oder operations), the forcing of the Oder , the Berlin operation and the storming of Berlin . Grigory Dmitrievich performed the tasks of mining and demining territories and various objects, installing wire fences, repairing roads and bridges. During offensive operations, he was often in the battle formations of the infantry, ensuring the overcoming of the minefields and wire barriers of the enemy, repairing attack bridges, blew up enemy fortifications and strong points. He ended the battle path in the capital of the German Empire. For courage shown in the battles for Berlin , the Red Army soldier G. D. Prokopenko was awarded the medal "For Courage" .
After the end of World War II, G. D. Prokopenko continued to serve in the Red Army until 1947. After demobilization Grigory Dmitrievich lived in Kharkov . Until 1969 he served in the internal troops of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs. Died on May 22, 1993 [3] .
