Ayam (headdress)

Ayam ( cor. 아얌 ) - Korean winter headdress, which was mainly worn by women during the Joseon Dynasty ( 1392 - 1910 ) [1] . It is also called aga , which literally translates from Korean as "covering the forehead." There is a historical record that mentions that lower-level officials of the iso (이서, 吏胥) wore ayam in the early period of the Joseon Dynasty, which suggests that both men and women could wear ayam. However, it is not known whether the ayam was in the same form as in the late period of the Joseon Dynasty. In the late period of the Joseon Ayam Dynasty, commoners were usually worn. Especially in the western part of Korea , where it was worn by kisen (entertaining artists) as a simple headdress [2] .

Description

Ayam usually consists of a mobu (모부 - crown) and tyrim (드림), which has the form of tengi (댕기), a large ribbon. The upper 4-5 cm mob are well- quilted , the vertical line of the front is shorter than the back. The front of the lower edge is more curved than the back. In addition, the vertical lines of the front and back are slightly rounded, so that when put on ayam, he sits well on his head. Black or purple silk is used for the upper quilted part of the outer fabric, while black or dark brown fur is used for the rest of the mob . Inside, a red cotton flannel fabric is used [2] .

The brush is attached at the top in the center on both sides: front and back and mostly red, and the threads with beads are connected on both sides. However, the tassels of some ayamas that wore kisen were decorated on both sides with large and luxurious precious stones, such as jade , amber , and operment [2] .

There are two types of tyrim that hang on the back of the ayama. The first type is made of two layers of fabric 9-10 cm wide, which are slightly connected to each other. The second type is made of one layer of fabric 18-20 cm wide with a fold in the center. The central line of tyrim is decorated with jade , amber and other precious stones, and its length is more than 100 cm. Ayam, worn in spring and autumn, has the same shape as winter, but is made of lighter silk [2] .
