Biography
Born June 15, 1921 in the village of Petsk near Vrginmost. He graduated from high school in Sisak . From his youth, he was a member of the Union of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia, and founded the SKMU cell in the same Sisak. After the school closed in April 1941 and the beginning of the Yugoslav war against the Axis countries, he went into partisan underground, organizing the first detachments in Petsk, Pern, Katinovac and Zrni Potok. In July 1941, the Giuro formed a party organization and a partisan detachment in his village, at first 15, and then 40, becoming his political instructor.
On July 27, 1941, Baich officially led the partisan movement in his village. In the first battles, he contacted the Bani partisan detachment in Shamaritsa, recruiting girls to the Women's Anti-Fascist Front and organizing the first anti-fascist councils in the villages. On March 1, 1942, he, as part of the 3rd battalion of the 1st Kordun detachment, launched an attack on Vrnograch. A detachment of 14 broke into Vrnograch, and Juro personally destroyed five Ustash soldiers and gendarmes. However, soon the place was surrounded by Ustash reinforcements and a detachment of Domobran militias. Baich lost six people in an eight-hour battle, and when the enemy launched the last attack, only nine remained in the squad, five of whom were injured. All nine people died: Juro blew himself up with a grenade.
By decree of Josip Broz Tito of July 24, 1953, Giuro Baich was posthumously awarded the title of People's Hero.
