Mummy from San Andres

Mummy from San Andres

The mummy from San Andres is a mummy of the culture of the Guanches (the ancient aborigines of the Canary Islands ).

One of the best preserved guanche mummies and one of the few that have their own name that refers to the place of discovery of the mummy. The mummy belongs to a man of 25-30 years old, it is wrapped in six strips of goat skin. The mummy was found in a cave in a ravine near the village of San Andres on the island of Tenerife . The place where the mummy was discovered is rich in archaeological material. It is assumed that the mummy belonged to one of the Mensei (local kings), or to one of the senior Guanches.

The exact year of the discovery of this mummy is unknown. It was exhibited at the Museum of Nature and Man in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1958 and is still located there. It is considered the most famous and best preserved mummy of the Guanches.
