Content

Feature

Herz aus Glas is one of the best soundtracks that Florian Friquet wrote for the films of Werner Herzog and one of the masterpieces of Popol Vuh . Taking as starting point the classical music of East India, Fricke and Fichelsher with the assistance of Gromer on the sitar and von Tippelkirch on the flute recorded one of the most delightful works in the history of the group. Fricke's focus on painfully slow-moving topics (even slower than usual) creates an atmosphere of transcendental euphoria. Conscious dynamic containment serves the idea of conveying the deep emotional and spiritual content of music. It is generally believed that the choral singing on the albums of Hosianna Mantra or Sei Still, Wisse ICH BIN makes them the most striking masterpieces of the group, but in the purely instrumental incarnation of Herz aus Glas, Popol Vuh is certainly the best work. It has so much beauty that it at once gently breaks the heart without any effort [1] .

One of the last outstanding Popol Vuh albums. Compositions range from meditative to energetic, from the Popol Vuh style of the mid-1970s to purely oriental music (thanks to sitar). Spiritual inspiration still played an important role and perfectly illustrated the contemplative moments of Herzog's film [2] .

Herz aus Glas is very close in style and aesthetics to classic Popol Vuh albums such as Seligpreisung and Einsjäger & Siebenjäger . Herz aus Glas sounds very quiet, fresh and pastoral with dense flowing guitar parts and episodic Indian sitar stew. He very well weaves flickering mantric folk rock tunes with completely neutral, natural ambient . The result was quite accessible and pleasant, but not as transcendental as the humming, texture and dark mystical synthesizer experiments of Affenstunde or In den Gärten Pharaos [3] .
