The aircraft was a further development of Polikarpov’s aircraft of the “double fighter of the first” DI-1 and the “single fighter of the third” I-3 . The development of the I-6 fighter dragged on for a long time. By the time of the first departure of the aircraft N.N. Development

The glider was a biplane, almost a half-plane, with the engine “Gnome-Ron-Jupiter” with a capacity of 450 liters. with. with a two-bladed wooden screw of an invariable step.

The fuselage was a monocoque of double curvature glued from veneer. The wings were identical to the wings of the I-3 aircraft - two-spar conventional design. The plumage and ailerons were made of duralumin and covered with linen. N-shaped wing struts were also made of duralumin.

The development of the aircraft began in September 1928, and by August 1, 1929 the prototype was ready. The second car was ready in March 1930. Both copies were supposed to participate in the May parade. According to its flight characteristics, the aircraft was one of the best for its time.

On June 15, 1930, during flight tests of the I-6 prototype, test pilot Shirinkin left the car with a parachute for no apparent reason. The plane flew some more distance and fell to the ground.

After comparing the two I-5 and I-6 models, preference was given to the I-5 aircraft, since the latter had better rate of climb and a turn time of 1 second less, although the I-6 fighter had a slightly higher speed.
