History

Holy Cross Deserts was founded in September 1986 by hieromonk Calliste (Pazalos) in House Springs , Missouri.

In 1992, after the death of hieromonk Kallista, the monastery was adopted under the spiritual nourishment of the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville and became its compound .

During its existence, the desert spread and grew. In 1999, the number of desert dwellers doubled compared to the foundation time, and all available cells for the monks were filled.

In 2000, the cloister received a donation of land in West Virginia from Maurice and Nadezhda Sill and with the blessing of the abbot of Holy Trinity Monastery, Archbishop Laurus (Shkurly) and the confessor of the monastery, Hegumen George (Scheifer) , it was decided to relocate the monastery. The move was made on May 25, 2000.

On November 9, 2003, a monastery hotel burnt down. [1]

After arriving in the monastery in 2008, the icon of the Mother of God "Port Arthur", the monastery began to grow and flourish quickly [2] .

On May 7, 2009, by the decision of the Synod of Bishops, the Cross of the Exaltation of the Cross in West Virginia was granted the status of a monastery, after which a meeting of the brethren was held at the monastery to elect a new priest. He was elected Bishop of Mayfield George [3] .

In December 2012, at Christmas , the monastery released the first issue of the English-language magazine Kairos Quarterly [4] [5] .

On June 25, 2013 at about 6 o'clock in the morning a devastating fire struck the Blessed Virgin Nativity Skete and a candle factory on the territory of the monastery. The fire did not cause serious, life-threatening damage to monastics [6] .

In the summer of the same year, the construction of the necessary building for household needs was started, where the candle shop will be located instead of the burned down one in the summer of 2013. The farm building will also have an industrial bakery, a centralized tool storage, a meeting room for the monastic community [7]

On March 1, 2016, the remains of the founder of the monastery, Hieromonk Callistos (Pazalos), relocated from a base in House Springs, pcs., Were reburied in a new monastery cemetery. Missouri [8] .

Current State

Most monks are Orthodox Christians. The life of the monastery follows the basic principles of Eastern Orthodox communion monasticism, especially such qualities as unceasing prayer, obedience and diligence [9] . Archpriest Victor Potapov described the Holy Cross Monastery as follows:

Holy Cross Monastery is surprised that all the monks are Americans. The hymns are performed in English, too, but in Russian znamenny znamen . Monastic traditions are strictly Russian. If you look at the photos, it seems that you are on Valaam or in Optina . The same robes, the same hoods, the same schedule of worship. This can not fail to please [10] .

The monks produce incense in accordance with the ancient Athos traditions, are engaged in iconography , produce homemade soap, sell liturgical objects.

The monastery of St. John the Theological Monastery (Hiram, Ohio) acts as a monastery courtyard.
