The Central Political Administration ( Italian: casellario politico centrale ) is a special service , an internal security organ of Italy , which existed in 1894-1969.
It was created in 1894 (circulars of the Directorate General of the Police of the Kingdom of Italy 5116 dated 05.25.1894 and 6329 dated 08.16.1894) with the aim of systematically monitoring the so-called "disruptive elements", as well as the unemployed and vagrants (to which, for example, vagrant actors are often ranked ) in the interests of order and public safety .
The creation of a special service was one of the measures to establish political control over the first national organizations of the Italian proletariat . The Office’s instructions provided for the maintenance of a register of “subversive elements” indicating their biographical data and political orientation, in particular, the categories “ anarchists ”, “socialist-anarchists”, “ socialists ” and “republicans” were singled out [1] .
A number of dossiers compiled by the Office date back to its creation, but rarely contain data before 1880. Before the Nazis came to power in 1922, the Directorate formed a dossier for about 40 thousand people, mainly socialists (including the dossier on Benito Mussolini , who was a young man in the Socialist Party ), anarchists and Republicans, and, since 1921, the Communists.
During fascism, the Office was expanded and strengthened, especially after the adoption of the code of laws on public safety in 1926 and the creation in 1931 of OVRA , the body to combat anti-fascists. During the period of fascism, the Office compiled files on more than 110 thousand people.
Archives of the Office, which are stored in the Central State Archive [2] contain data about 152 thousand people, of which at least one third are anti-fascists [3] .
After World War II, the Office was redesigned and dealt mainly with the affairs of former fascists, anarchists, socialists and communists. In 1969 it was liquidated.
