The Heni-Unstad Arts Center is located on a promontory in the Oslo Fjord , about 10 km south of Oslo . The center was founded in 1968 by world and Olympic champion figure skater Sonia Heni (1912-1969) and her husband, shipowner and art collector Nils Unstad (1909-1978). In 1961, the Sony Foundation and Nils Unstad Foundation donated their private collection of contemporary art, 110 paintings in total, as well as funds for the construction and operation of the center to the couple. Designed by Norwegian architects Jon Eikvar and Sven Erik Engebretsen, the Center also houses a collection of Sonya Heni sports awards.
In 1994, the building was expanded, and a two-story wing with exhibition and technical facilities was added. This project was developed by the same architects - a new wing adjoins the main part of the building as an organic continuation. In addition to six exhibition halls, the center also has a small auditorium and conference rooms. Today, the total area of the building is about 9,500 square meters, of which 3,500 occupy exhibition spaces. The Center's collection includes works by the following authors: Pablo Picasso , Henri Matisse , Fernand Leger , Max Ernst , Hundertwasser , John Miro , Paul Klee and others.
The Heni-Unstad Arts Center organizes exhibitions and performances. The art center is visited by about 100,000 people every year. The center celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2008 with exhibitions, seminars, a book, a concert and a film called Høvikodden LIVE.
