Feature
During this period, Popol Vuh released one classic album after another, and Einsjäger & Siebenjäger was no exception. Here the group shrank down to its core, those musicians who will be the core of the group for many years to come are Florian Fricke , Daniel Fihelsher and Joog Yun . Fihelscher began to exert a greater influence on Fricke’s vision, which only enriched the group’s work [1] .
The album has more Fricke piano ensemble and Fihelscher's space-rock electric guitar with oriental influences as part of blues phrasing. The five short songs on the first side are only preparation for the psychedelic title track, which occupies the entire second side. It contains ethnic percussion, piano, pulsation and hypnotic rehearsal tense guitar parts, the vocals of the magnificent Jong Yong and long-lasting improvisations. This, one of the most beautiful albums of the 1970s, Popol Vuh , became the pinnacle of their trademark ability to combine beauty and freedom of composition [2] .
The group is in the middle of its second period (the first was experimental, the second was more symphonic and later more ambient oriented, mainly due to the soundtracks for Herzog films), and this fifth album is close to the artistic top of the group [3] .
Einsjäger & Siebenjäger is a characteristic album of the best years of Popol Vuh . As usual, the group offers very pacifying, humane music directed to the wonderful, quiet, contemplative moments of life. The album causes the inner landscapes of consciousness, as if appearing before closed eyes. The first track (later recorded again on the album Nosferatu ) contains a mystical repetitive guitar pattern, played as if on a sitar. "King Minos" (also included in Nosferatu ) showed a band playing progressive rock with Fihelscher's floating and caressing guitar playing. All compositions as a whole are built according to a single scheme, where, from time to time, an elegant, marvelous piano by Fricke [4] comes to the first place.
