13 Japanese Birds ( Eng. "13 Japanese Birds" ) - a series of 13 albums of the Japanese noise project Merzbow , the only member of which is Masami Akita. Albums were recorded in October 2008 - November 2009 (one album per month) and released in 2009-2010. on the American label Important Records [1] both as separate releases, and as a single box set [2] .

Creating a series
According to Masami Akita, he was inspired by the piano cycle of the French ornithologist and composer Olivier Messian's “ Catalog of Birds ” [3] , which also consists of 13 parts.
In addition, Masami Akita is a vegetarian and active advocate for animal rights, is fond of raising decorative chickens and devotes many of her albums to birds, trying to draw public attention to environmental issues [4] [5] .
Each album of the series is dedicated to one of the birds, whose range is Japan.
“13 Japanese Birds” differs from most other releases in that, in addition to complex noises, there are live drums [2] .
