Russia

In the Russian Empire in 1814, in connection with the reform of theological schools, the charters of all theological academies regarding the conferment of academic degrees were agreed. As a result, according to unified rules, the degrees “ candidate of theology ”, “ master of theology ” and “ doctor of theology ” were awarded. The degrees of the candidate and master of theology were assigned to graduates of the academies according to the results of their studies and the knowledge gained. The degree of Doctor of Theology was awarded based on the results of defense of the dissertation [4] .

In modern Russia, the degree of “Master of Theology” in accordance with the Bologna process is built into theological education in the Russian Orthodox Church , where it occupies the second level - a 2-year program in theological academies, the result of which is the writing of a master's thesis for the degree of “Master of Theology” [5] .

North America

In North America, a Master of Theology degree ( Master of Theology; Th.M., M.Th. ), as defined by the Association of Theological Schools of the United States and Canada, is a confirmation of the educational minimum required for teaching theological disciplines in accredited educational institutions. Usually it is awarded after receiving the degrees of the master of theology ( Eng. Master of Divinity (M. Div.)) or Master of Arts in Theology ( Eng. Master of Arts in Theology; MATh. ), as well as confirmation of a three-year training. This degree means a one- or two-year specialization in theological studies. Her receipt may be preceded by passing exams or defending a master's thesis . [2] [6]
