Cemetery History
The Muslim cemetery Karaotkel existed from 1609 to 1962. In 2010, by resolution of the Akimat of Astana, the cemetery was given the status of a monument of local importance. Tombstone epitaphs are written in Arabic and Persian, and scientists from Astana and Almaty are currently involved in translating the epitaphs into Kazakh and Russian. [one]
The Department of Culture of the city of Astana initiated research on the Muslim cemetery Karaotkel, located in the heart of the capital. Many legends and legends are associated with this historical monument, however reliable scientific facts have not yet been available. During the painstaking work of registering, localizing, photographing, numbering and describing each tombstone, it was found that 2,169 gravestones made of wood, stone, metal and other materials are located on a small area of only 0.16 square kilometers. However, the results of a detailed study of the microrelief indicate that this cemetery hides about 10,000 burials. Such an impressive figure, according to the chairman of the Kazakhstan Archaeological Society Karl Baipakov, indicates that this cemetery is multi-layered, and it has been formed over many centuries. “The top layer is stone and concrete steles, preserved tombstones. But under these graves and next to them there are a lot of other burials, ”he said. After a large-scale study of the Karaotkel historical monument, the Metropolitan Culture Department was given a set of records for each of 2,169 tombstones recorded in the cemetery - a total of 8676 separate documents. The Karaotkel cemetery is mainly Muslim, but there are also Orthodox and Jewish burials. Of particular interest are the graves of teachers of the Muslim school, religious representatives from Bukhara and Kazan, which date back to the late 19th century. Also, associates of Saken Seyfullin are buried in this cemetery, including Zhakia Ainabekov, his family, and brothers. Scientists say they do not intend to stop their scientific search at the facility. Ahead of them is a translation of all the surviving inscriptions on the steles. [2]
A three-dimensional scanner of the cemetery was made. [3]
