Prokatov, Vasily Nikolaevich

Vasily Nikolaevich Prokatov was born on August 28, 1923 in a peasant family in the village of Kuzovlyovo, Kadnikovsky district, Vologda province of the RSFSR of the USSR (now the village of the Kharovsky district of the Vologda region of the Russian Federation ). V.N. Prokatov was drafted into the ranks of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army on July 21, 1941. He graduated from the school of junior commanders in Cherepovets . In battles with the Nazi invaders Vasily Nikolaevich since December 1941 as commander of a rifle division on the Volkhov Front . In the spring of 1942 he was seriously injured, he was treated for seven months in a hospital in Krasnodar . After recovering in November 1942, Sergeant V.N. Prokatov was sent to the 350th Infantry Division of the 6th Army of the Voronezh Front , where he was appointed to the post of commander of the Infantry Division of the 1st Infantry Battalion of the 1180th Infantry Regiment. Before the Soviet counteroffensive near Stalingrad, the division took up positions on the left bank of the Don in the area of ​​the village of Derezovka.

Before the operation “Small Saturn”, the 1180th Infantry Regiment of the 350th Infantry Division was tasked with ice to cross the Don and capture the bridgehead on the right bank of the river. The right bank of the Don at the crossing was a steep steep bank formed by chalk outcrops with talus and cliffs. Therefore, armed with ladders, hooks and cats, in the early morning of December 14, 1942, after artillery preparation, the assault group of the 1st Rifle Battalion attempted to cross the Don west of the village of Derezovka. However, the gunners were not able to completely suppress enemy firepower. When the group reached the middle of the river, from the right bank the enemy opened heavy machine-gun fire from the bunker. The assault squad lay on ice. In this situation, Sergeant V.N. Prokatov overcame the Don with a swift throw and climbed a sheer icy rock to a height. Not having the means to destroy the bunker, V.N. Prokatov piled his chest on the embrasure, enabling the battalion to forcelessly force Don and take a bridgehead to cross the main forces of the regiment. For the exemplary performance of the combat missions of the command on the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 31, 1943, Sergeant Prokatov Vasily Nikolayevich was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously. V.N. Prokatov was buried in a mass grave No. 195 near the village of Derezovka, Verkhnyamamonsky District, Voronezh Region.
