Azerbaijanis in Kars

Azerbaijanis in Kars ( tour. Kars Azerileri ; Azeri. Qars Azərbaycanlıları ) is a community of Azerbaijanis living in Kars silt in Turkey . A large number of Azerbaijanis live in the center of Kars and related villages. The Sunni population of Kars called the Azerbaijanis “ shiya ” (they rarely used the name “adjem”) ^[1] .

In the city of Kars, Azerbaijanis mainly live in the neighborhoods ( makhalla ) of Yenimahalla and Istasyon. Here, among the Azerbaijanis, the following groups are distinguished: Molla Musalylar, Karakiliseliler, Kulubegliler and Chobankerelilerler. These names reflect the names of regions and villages where they come from ^[1] .

The following Azerbaijani villages are located in the Kars region: Bashgedikler, Bayraktar, Bekler, Buyuk Akuzum, Karakash, Kuchyuk Pirveli, Kulveren, Soilu, Tazekent, Yagykesen, Lajchinlar, Yylanly. In the Arpachay district - Badzhioglu, Ibishkoy, Kayadeven, Mesjitli, Meydanjyk, Tashdere, in the region of Akyak - Akbulak, Aslankhan, Buyukkymly, Buyukpirveli, Esenayaila, Kyuchyuk Akuzyum, Kuchyuklar Kymly. Azerbaijanis make up the majority of the population of the center of Akakya ^[1] .

In the Arpachay district, Azerbaijanis, along with other ethnic groups, live in the following villages: Buyukchatma, Gediksatylmysh, Kuchyukchatma, Chetindurak, Demirkent, Chetinkoy, Gadzhipiri, Kalkankale, Khamzagerek, Kurekdere, Oguzlu. Azerbaijanis also live in such villages of Kars as Gadzhiveli, Yolachan and others. ^[1]

It should be noted that since 1921, the ethnographic group of Azerbaijanis - Terekemenians - has been living in Kars. They are settled both in the central villages and in the villages of Selim , Sarykamysh and Arpachai ^[2] .
