Horizons, Nikolai Ivanovich

Nikolai Ivanovich Horizons ( April 29 ( May 11 ) 1879 , Kazan - April 29, 1949 , Novosibirsk ) - Russian Soviet obstetrician-gynecologist. Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Tomsk State University (1917-1932), First Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Novosibirsk Medical Institute (1938-1949).

Biography

Nikolai Ivanovich Horizontov was born into a family of a history teacher in religious schools. Father, Ivan Timofeevich Horizontov - a native of Tomsk , a graduate of the Kazan Theological Academy in 1876 , State Councilor [1] .

Nicholas studied at the Kazan Theological School, then at the seminary, which he did not graduate [2] .

A graduate of the medical faculty of the Kazan University (according to other information he graduated from the University of Dorpat , where he was allowed to accept seminarians).

Assistant of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Kazan University, headed by Professor Viktorin Sergeyevich Gruzdev .

On January 8, 1914, he was sent on the advice of V. S. Gruzdev to Freiburg to get acquainted with the formulation of the case of gynecological radiotherapy and radiotherapy in German obstetric-gynecological clinics. He stayed there for 7 months and on August 2, 1914 he returned to Russia. The experience gained in Germany allowed the use of radiation therapy in Kazan. In the same year of 1914, 11 patients suffering from uterine cancer were treated with X-rays, and a total of 136 sessions were performed [3] .

Since 1917, heads the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tomsk University .

Under his leadership, the department developed new methods for the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological diseases, including with the use of X-ray therapy, a significant place was given to gynecological endocrinology. On the basis of the Tomsk Balneophysio-Therapeutic Institute (now Tomsk Research Institute of Balneology and Physiotherapy), the staff of the department carried out a number of studies concerning the radiotherapy of benign and malignant tumors of the female genital. The study of Siberian resorts continued, scientifically substantiated and introduced methods of vaginal mud therapy of gynecological diseases.

With the efforts of N. I. Horizontov and the staff of the department in 1924 an obstetric-gynecological hospital was established (now the N. A. Semashko Maternity Hospital). A significant amount of work on obstetrics and gynecology was published, which received high marks in the scientific world. Among them are the Therapeutic Handbook on Obstetrics and Gynecology for students of medical universities, specialized chapters and articles in major manuals such as Diseases of the female genital organs, the Guide to Women's Diseases, edited by Professor L. A. Krivsky , the article Colpotomy ”Written for the first edition of the Big Medical Encyclopedia [4] [5] .

In 1932, Horizontov moved to Novosibirsk , where he headed the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Novosibirsk Institute of Advanced Medical Studies.

In 1938 he created the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Novosibirsk Medical Institute , which he headed until his death.

Honored Scientist of the RSFSR. Honorary Professor of National Medical University [6] .

He died on April 29, 1949 in Novosibirsk.
