Eupithecia fredi (lat.) - species of moths ( Geometridae ). Afghanistan The wingspan is about 18-22.5 mm. Fore wings brownish-gray, hind wings about the same, but lighter than the front. Labial palps short, smaller than eye diameter. Similar to E. assectata Dietze, 1904. The species was described in 2012 by Russian entomologist Vladimir Mironov ( ZIN RAS , St. Petersburg ) and German lepidopterologist Ulrich Ratzel (Ulrich Ratzel; Karlsruhe ) and named after the German lepidopterologist Fred Brandt (Fred Brandt ), the first butterfly collector in Afghanistan. Brandt assembled a model series during the Second World War , being in 1941-1942 in this country on the instructions of German Abwehr , together with his colleague M. Oberdörffer, specialist in tropical medicine. There they came under fire in Logar (near Kabul ; an incident known as the “Logar incident”), Brandt was injured and his partner was killed. Almost the entire collection of butterflies collected there also perished, except for the type series of the species Eupithecia fredi [1] .
