Biography
Jäger was born in Schaffhausen , Switzerland . In World War I, he received the Iron Cross of Class I. He joined the Nazi party in 1923 (serial number 359269) and the SS in 1932 (serial number 62823). He was appointed head of the local branch of the SD in Ludwigsburg , and then in 1935 in Ravensburg and in 1938 in Münster .
From July 1941 to September 1943, Jäger was the commander of the Einsatzgruppen 3 Einsatzgruppe A in Kaunas , Lithuania . Jaeger did not just follow orders - he did it with special zeal, taking the initiative. During this time, he gave a detailed report to the authorities about the acts of mass murder. Some of these reports survived the war and are collectively referred to as the Jaeger Report . By the beginning of 1942, most Jews were exterminated in Lithuania , including 136421 people by the Jaeger team.
Jäger was transferred to Germany at the end of 1943, was appointed commander of the SD in Reichenberg .
Avoiding arrest at the end of the war, Jäger lived under his own name, not far from Heidelberg , and worked on a farm. They arrested him only in March 1959. On the night of June 22, 1959, he hanged himself in his cell.
Jaeger Report
December 1, 1941 Jaeger compiled a report on the work of his Einsatz team. This is the most accurate of the surviving reports of the Einsatzkommand. The report was prepared in five copies, but only one has been preserved, now it is in the Central State Archive of Lithuania in Vilnius .
The report contains data on the almost daily activities of the Ainsatzcommand 3 from July 2, 1941 to November 25, 1941, during which a total of 137,346 people were eliminated, the vast majority of whom are Jews. The report talks about the exact date and place of the massacres, the number of victims and their categorization (Jews, Communists, criminals, etc.). In total, there were more than 100 executions in 71 different locations. February 1, 1942 Eger updates the results: 136,421 Jews (46,403 men, 55,556 women and 34,464 children), 1,064 Communists, 653 mentally retarded and 134 others.
